Chinatown Art Studio is an arts space for Asian & Pacific Islander American (API) youth in DC, centered around multimedia arts education and creative development. Free of charge to participants, the program will provide instruction in a range of arts techniques and mediums, and guided exploration of traditional and contemporary art cultures. The Art Studio a space for free self-expression, practice in desired mediums, and spontaneous collaboration with friends and peers. Ultimately, by providing tools, mentorship, and opportunities, the Chinatown Art Studio supports its participants in shaping their creative voice, and in building connections with local communities through art.

AREAS OF INSTRUCTION & EXPLORATION

  • Elements & Principles of Art (Line, Shape, Value, Form, Texture, Color; Balance; Rhythm, Movement, Contrast); Drawing from life

  • Pencil, Charcoal; Pen & Ink; Acrylic, Watercolor Basics.

  • Linocut printing; Screen printing; Stenciling, Print Design Basics; Typography & Calligraphy.

  • Historical Art Movements; Global contemporary art; Realism, Abstract & Conceptual ArT

  • DIY culture; T-shirt/streetwear; Poster Art through the ages; Street Art & Graffiti

  • Textile Design; Print Design; T-shirt/tote bag design; etc.

Chinatown Art Studio programming is open to youth who live and go to school in DC. Youth with Asian & Pacific Islander backgrounds are especially encouraged to enroll.
